Planning an Outdoor Event in South Florida: Sound, Stage and Weather Tips

Parks, backyards, farms and parking lots can make amazing event spaces, but outdoor events in South Florida bring heat, wind and sudden rain. Here is what our production crews at Nation Wide Sound DJ’s plan for on every outdoor job.

1. Power First

Sound, lighting, video and food vendors all need power. Find out what circuits are available, how far they are from the stage and whether you need a generator. Never run professional audio on the same circuit as heaters or coffee urns.

2. Size the Sound to the Space

Outdoors there are no walls to reflect sound, so you need more coverage than indoors. Small parties may need two powered speakers and a sub. Festivals and concerts need line-array systems with delay speakers for the back of the crowd. Point speakers away from neighbors and check local noise rules.

3. Give Performers a Real Stage

A stage lifts performers above the crowd so everyone can see, and a roof protects equipment from sun and rain. For larger shows, a mobile stage rental sets up quickly and includes a roof and rigging points for lights and speakers.

4. Plan for Rain and Wind

Afternoon storms are part of life in Miami-Dade. Have tents or a covered stage, keep cables off the ground, and agree on a weather-delay plan before the event. Secure banners, backdrops and truss against wind.

5. Lighting for After Sunset

Once the sun goes down, lighting keeps guests safe and the party going. Plan stage wash lights, festoon lighting for walkways and effects for the dance floor.

6. Permits and Timing

Public events may need city or county permits for amplified sound, stages and road closures. Start early and build load-in and load-out times into your schedule.
